Canada Post unveils stamp celebrating literary luminary Margaret Atwood

Margaret Atwood is remaining celebrated for her contributions to Canadian literature with a special stamp, unveiled on Thursday.

Canada Post launched the stamp at a Toronto occasion, which integrated speeches by filmmaker Sarah Polley and activist Ceta Ramkhalawansingh.

It functions a photograph of Atwood resting her hand on her face, with her famous line “a term immediately after a word right after a phrase is energy,” from her poem Spelling, repeated in the history.

Atwood told the crowd at the Toronto Reference Library that the tribute has encouraged “stamp envy” among the her friends, which include one particular who exclaimed, “you’re not even useless but.”

The 82-yr outdated pointed out that a good deal of living luminaries are featured on Canadian postage, but quipped she doubted that would allay the outrage about her “deficiency of deadness.”

A single of Canada’s most prolific and embellished writers, Atwood’s bibliography spans much more than 50 publications of poetry, fiction, criticism, essays and graphic novels.

The tribute will come weeks following Atwood shared, on Twitter, a Toronto Star belief piece arguing the term “female” was getting a dirty phrase — drawing condemnations and accusations of transphobia, both online and in the media.
