EFF leader Julius Malema was under fire on social media on Sunday night for showing his support to DJ Shimza amid a Twitter storm.

Users on the microblogging and social networking service didn’t like that the politician was siding with the DJ in an online battle that’s been raging all weekend long.

According to his bio on his official website, DJ Shimza – real name Ashley Raphala – has “made the transition from aspirant industry young blood to leading light of the global afro house scene at almost breakneck speed”.

The young star landed in hot water over Easter Weekend for his response on Twitter to a fellow DJ reaching out to him on the platform.

Rising talent DJ Ceega Wa Meropa on 10 April at 07:34 tweeted DJ Shimza, saying: “Am asking @Shimza01 to invite me on one of his lockdown shows since the president extended..Also askibg everyone who sees this tweet to RT [sic]”

DJ Shimza then at 08:02 on the same day responded: “You need to stop harassing me, it’s annoying [sic]”.

DJ Ceega then responded: “Thanks i will [sic]”

This exchange and DJ Shimza’s seemingly short-fused response had Twitter fuming and even caught the attention of big names in the industry like DJ Black Coffee and Gagasi FM who jumped in to offer Ceega opportunities.

At 12:03 on 11 April, DJ Shimza issued an apology on Twitter: “Once again guys, I apologize to everyone I have offended. I must always remember to hold myself to a higher standard. Marumo fatse.”

ADDING FUEL TO THE FIRE

Just as things started to simmer down, Julius Malema added a tweet that saw him trending right into Sunday night.

“Never be shaken by rubbish young man @Shimza01. You worked very hard to be where you are and can’t be destroyed by those who suffer from self-hate. Apology accepted, now continue playing good music,” Malema tweeted at 21:45 on Saturday night.

Many called out Malema for siding with DJ Shimza which quickly saw his name rise to the top of the trends list yet again.

On Sunday, Malema tweeted: “You can go to hell”.

Channel24 reached out to EFF spokesperson, Vuyani Pambo who said the party had no statement to add to the matter as Julius Malema often trends on Twitter.

Channel24 also reached out to both DJ Shimza and DJ Ceega Wa Meropa for request for comment on Sunday night and will update this article if any is received.
