Poetry in the Sky is a fitting title for a book of the tasteful visuals of Australian photographer Christian Spencer. Slated for release next month, the volume gathers close to two decades’ worth birds Spencer encountered in the course of visits to the Brazilian Amazon, such as macaws, emus, and the species he’s perhaps most notable for documenting: the hummingbird.
Taken when the creatures are mid-flight and beating their wings at extraordinary speeds, Spencer’s putting photos seize daylight as it filters by their feathers, emitting a comprehensive spectrum of shade. The opalescent phenomenon is brought on by diffraction and transforms their limbs into small, ephemeral rainbows.
Poetry in the Sky includes quite a few images of the prismatic birds—many of which we have featured previously on Colossal—in addition to dozens of more photos of avian everyday living. Pre-purchase a copy from Bookshop, select up a print, and uncover a lot more of Spencer’s function on Instagram.
