We Love NYC concert officially canceled as Henri batters Big Apple

New York City’s “Homecoming” live performance at Central Park was canceled right after coming to an abrupt halt in the middle of Barry Manilow’s efficiency Saturday night — as lightning storms tied to approaching Hurricane Henri descended on the Massive Apple.

Concertgoers had been told at 7:37 p.m. to “proceed to your vehicles and safeguarded regions exterior of the function center” as Manilow was singing his 1978 hit “Can’t Smile Devoid of You.”

An announcer could be listened to declaring that the really expected live performance was “canceled.”

Times earlier, Mayor Bill de Blasio expressed optimism that the show would go on. “We have to have all people for a brief period of time to shift to some place safe because of thunder and lightning, and then we will provide the live performance back,” he explained at the mic. 

Some stragglers stuck around — till a significant downpour sent cleared the park’s Terrific Garden wherever the live performance was becoming held.

Sources explained the mayor stubbornly pushed the NYPD to let the show to resume from 10 p.m. to midnight, but persistent thunder and lightning built that unachievable. Police officers had to help people out of the park in vans, including a person lady whose wheelchair ran out of electricity, sources explained.

Hurricane Henri, a Category 1 storm, is predicted to contact down east of New York Metropolis on Sunday. The storm on Saturday dampened the mayor’s hope to showcase a triumphant NYC with a star-studded ensemble featuring Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Journey and a host of other acts cheered by countless numbers of vaccinated New Yorkers.

Springsteen, Simon, Elvis Costello, Patti Smith and Colombian pop star Maluma had been all among the artists whose performances had been scuttled by the storm.

But the risk of the wild, wet Sunday did not dampen spirits. Music fans soaked in the scene and seems, even as darkening storm clouds blotted out the sunlight and moved in more than the skyscrapers of Billionaires’ Row at the southern end of Central Park before showtime.

“It was intended to rain they said and I explained ‘no, no, no!’ arrive hell or superior drinking water I’m coming for New York Metropolis,” explained Springsteen admirer Joanne Novack, 56, of Extended Branch, NJ. “I assume this is kick ass and I assume it is terrific.”

The New York Philharmonic tuned up the temper for the night in the opening set, with a suite of Gotham-inspired instrumentals including “Arthur’s Topic (Greatest That You Can Do)” popularized by Christopher Cross and “New York State of Mind” by Billy Joel.

Gena Borson stood and cheered as the orchestra shut out with Big Apple anthem “Theme from New York New York.”

“Every time I hear that music I get chills,” explained Borson, 60, of Harlem. “If Frank Sinatra simply cannot sing it, I’ll hear to the Philharmonic complete it. New York and New Yorkers are so resilient. We get treatment of each other listed here … I assume the music is apropos.” 

Manilow built it by means of “Copacabana” and “Mandy” before he was lower off.

“It took so a lot work from so many folks to put this show with each other. It definitely is so disappointing,” the Brooklyn-born singer told CNN more than the cellular phone. “I experienced no notion it was going to storm.”

Dissatisfied tunes fans hope the show might go on.

“It’s very disappointing. I didn’t even get to see the Killers — that is the major reason why I arrived.” explained Shinice Hemmings. “The live performance was going so nicely and it was so excellent.”

Others had been furious the show hadn’t been named off earlier.

“We just bought in so we’re triggered. We just bought in and they’re like ‘Evacuate,’ Brandee McDermott, 26, Bay Ridge, explained. “You’re deploying the Countrywide Guard nonetheless you are having a live performance? They see the storm coming and they do almost nothing about it. They faux it is not taking place.”

“It kinda summarizes 2020 and 2021 for us,” Kevin McKeown, 60, of Extended Island explained even though in search of cover exterior the Satisfied. “If you search at it. It sucks all around.
