Writers’ Trust of Canada announces new $60K award for best Canadian book on public policy

The Writers’ Have confidence in of Canada has introduced a new literary award. The Balsillie Prize for Public Coverage is a $60,000 award that acknowledges the ideal Canadian ebook about public policy.

The prize will be funded by businessman and philanthropist Jim Balsillie. Balsillie is the previous co-CEO of Investigation in Movement.

“This prize will highlight authors and thoughts that aim to deal with the core issues of our culture and preferably lead to a far more engaged, educated, and enlightened Canada,” Balsillie stated in a push assertion. “My hope is that we can spur the commissioning of books that engage the common public and have prospective to impact the do the job of the country’s top policymakers.”

The first edition of the prize will be given out in 2021. The finalists will be introduced on Oct. 13, 2021, and the winner will be unveiled on Nov. 24, 2021.

“The Balsillie Prize is a remarkable chance to convey better attention to the crucial conversations Canadians – and Canadian writers – are owning about building a more powerful and far more inclusive region,” Catherine Clark, chair of the Writers’ Have confidence in, stated in a push assertion.

Balsillie is also funding the Writers’ Have confidence in Fiction Prize, which was not too long ago renamed the Atwood Gibson Writers’ Have confidence in Fiction Prize, after Margaret Atwood and Graeme Gibson. That prize’s purse is also now $60,000.

Balsillie donated $3 million to the Writers’ Have confidence in to fund these prizes.

The Writers’ Have confidence in of Canada is an group that supports Canadian writers by literary awards, fellowships, economic grants, mentorships and far more. 

It gives out seven prizes in recognition of the year’s ideal in fiction, nonfiction and limited story, as properly as mid-profession and life time achievement awards.

The group gave out far more than $970,000 to guidance Canadian writers in 2020.
